Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

What is it?

The CBT a certificate of completion validating a provisional motorcycle or moped licence. It was introduced by the Government in 1990 to ensure new riders get the training they need to be safe on the road.To view the CBT syllabus please ‘click here’

Do I need to take a CBT?

If you are in any doubt as to whether you need to take a CBT then please feel free to contact us here at Ipswich Rider Training. If you do need to take a CBT you will need to bring along your licence with the correct provisional entitlement (Category A for motorcycles, Category P for Mopeds) and be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (X123 XXX  format) or 20 metres (XX50 XXX format)

When are courses available?

Courses take place 6 days a week and usually start at 9am and finishing at around 4pm as there is a lot to get through.

What do I need to bring?

Come sensibly dressed (denim jeans are better than jogging bottoms). Remember to bring your licence (both parts if applicable) and the balance for the price of the course. Light refreshments, (teas, coffees etc)  are provided, but we suggest you bring a picnic lunch with you.

What does the CBT cover?

The course is partly classroom discussion and partly practical training.

The classroom discussion will cover the choice of clothing and equipment as well as the basic principles of roadcraft- hazard and speed awareness for example. Before coming along its a good idea to have a read of the Highway Code.

The practical training will cover the basics of motorcycle care as well as the correct use of the controls. It also includes riding the bike in a controlled off road site.

The final section of the CBT is a road ride of at least 2 hours in length.

Can I use my own bike?

Yes of course - so long as it is road legal, taxed, MOT’d if necessary, in roadworthy condition and has ‘L’ plates front and rear. Whilst training with us it will be covered by our insurance but only 3rd party. You will need to arrange cover for other risks. Please note that we do not arrange collection of your bike for the course or delivery after the course is completed (or any storage of the bike)

What if I don’t pass?

This is not a pass or fail course. It is a training course and you will receive your CBT Certificate (DL196) once the instructor is satisfied you have completed the course.

What if I am not a quick learner?

It is important you learn at your own pace. There is no pressure to complete the course in one day. If you do not complete the course on your first day you will be offered a second session of up to 4 hours without paying any extra. This additional session is on a 1-2-1 basis with your instructor. Usually this is all you will need to complete the course, however should you require further sessions there will be an extra charge. Please see Prices for this cost

How much does it cost and how do I book?

For current prices for CBT please see Prices. The price includes everything - bike hire, equipment and clothing, teas and coffee, and fuel. Please ring to book.

Can I park at the Ipswich Rider Training?

Unfortunately we have limited off road parking during the week, so we advise customers to use the adjacent on-street parking wherever possible. Your co-operation is very much appreciated.
