Learning to Ride - Motorcycle
To begin riding a motorcycle you must
- be at least 17 years old
- hold a valid DL196 certificate (CBT)
- hold a driving licence which allows you to ride motorcycles (Category A)
The licence can be any of the following
- a provisional driving licence. This provide provisional car, motorcycle, and moped entitlement
- a full car or moped licence. This provides provisional motorcycle entitlement
Since March 2002 provisional motorcycle entitlement has automatically been included on driving licences. If you hold a licence where the motorcycle entitlement has expired, or not been added, you will need to contact the DVLA for a replacement licence.
After completing a CBT, learners may ride a solo motorcycle up to 125cc or with a power output of no more than 11kW
With provisional motorcycle entitlement a rider must not
- ride on motorways
- carry a pillion passenger
- ride without ‘L’ plates (or ‘D’ plates in Wales) fitted to both front and rear of the vehicle
