Learning to Ride - Mopeds

A moped is a two wheel vehicle that has an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc and a design speed not exceeding 50 km/ph. Mopeds are not allowed on motorways.

 

Provisional moped entitlement must be validated with a DL196 (CBT).

 

It should be noted that provisional moped riders must not carry a pillion passenger and must display red ‘L’ plates (or ‘D’ plates in Wales).

 

To ride a moped on the road you must be at least 16 years old and hold a driving licence that entitles you to ride mopeds (Category P).

 

At 16 this can be a full or a provisional moped licence. If you hold a provisional licence you will also require a DL196 (CBT) to validate your moped entitlement.
